In August 2013, the Palestine Strings performed at the BBC Proms with world-renowned violinist Nigel Kennedy to a sell-out audience and unanimous acclaim in the British press. In summer 2016, its sister ensemble, the Palestine Youth Orchestra(PYO) is touring the UK, performing at world famous venues as they travel across the island from North to South.
Talented Palestinian and British youth are coming together on stage for the first time, showcasing their wonderful cultural achievements and carrying an important message of love, hope and peace.
Concerts include Arabic songs from Egypt and Lebanon alongside contemporary British music, Beethoven’s Leonore Overture No. 3 and Mussorgsky’s much loved musical interpretation of an art gallery Pictures at an Exhibition. Equally at home with Western and Arabic repertoire, the PYO maintains a unique position amongst youth orchestras internationally. This year the Palestinian young musicians will be joined by British students from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and Guildhall School of Music and Drama conducted by Sian Edwards (Head of Conducting at the Royal Academy of Music). The Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra will be coaching the PYO in Palestine and Scotland as part of the official partnership between the orchestras. The PYO will be rehearsing at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland between the 18th July and 24th July 2016, before embarking on their first UK tour, performing in world-class venues across the country.
